</p><p>Die <a href="Septuaginta" title="Septuaginta">Septuaginta</a> gibt den Namen mit <span lang="grc-Grek" class="Grek">Θαρα</span> <span class="Latn" lang="grc-Latn" style="font-weight:normal;font-style:italic">Thara</span> wieder, die <a href="Vulgata" title="Vulgata">Vulgata</a> schreibt <i>Thare</i>. Während die meisten Bibelübersetzungen gemäß den <a href="Loccumer_Richtlinien" class="mw-redirect" title="Loccumer Richtlinien">Loccumer Richtlinien</a> <i>Terach</i> als Name nutzen,<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> verwendet die <a href="Menge-Bibel" class="mw-redirect" title="Menge-Bibel">Menge-Bibel</a> die Form <i>Tharah</i>.

<p>Nach <a href="Genesis_(Bibel)" title="Genesis (Bibel)"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Gen</span></a> 11,10–24  ist Terach der Sohn <a href="Nahor" title="Nahor">Nahors</a> und in 9. Generation ein Nachfahre <a href="Noach" title="Noach">Noahs</a>. Im Alter von 70 Jahren zeugt er <a href="Abraham" title="Abraham">Abraham</a>, Nahor und <a href="Haran" title="Haran">Haran</a> (<a href="Genesis_(Bibel)" title="Genesis (Bibel)"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Gen</span></a> 11,26 ). Nach <a href="Genesis_(Bibel)" title="Genesis (Bibel)"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Gen</span></a> 20,12  ist auch Abrahams Frau <a href="Sara_(Erzmutter)" title="Sara (Erzmutter)">Sara</a> seine Tochter, jedoch stammt sie von einer anderen Mutter ab. Ehen zwischen Halbgeschwistern wurden erst im Gesetz Moses verboten (<a href="Deuteronomium" title="Deuteronomium"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Dtn</span></a> 27,22 ). Die Familie wohnt zunächst in <a href="Ur_(Stadt)" title="Ur (Stadt)">Ur</a> in <a href="Chald%C3%A4a" title="Chaldäa">Chaldäa</a> (<a href="Genesis_(Bibel)" title="Genesis (Bibel)"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Gen</span></a> 11,28 ). Nachdem Haran, der Vater <a href="Lot_(AT)" class="mw-redirect" title="Lot (AT)">Lots</a>, dort gestorben war und Nahor und Abraham geheiratet hatten, bricht Terach mit seiner Familie aus Ur auf, um ins ca. 2000 km entfernte <a href="Land_Kanaan" class="mw-redirect" title="Land Kanaan">Land Kanaan</a> zu ziehen. Sie lassen sich in der Stadt <a href="Harran" title="Harran">Haran</a> nieder, was vermutlich in der heutigen Türkei, nahe der syrischen Grenze liegt (<a href="Genesis_(Bibel)" title="Genesis (Bibel)"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Gen</span></a> 11,28–31 ). Nach biblischer Überlieferung stirbt Terach in Haran im Alter von 205 Jahren (<a href="Genesis_(Bibel)" title="Genesis (Bibel)"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Gen</span></a> 11,32 ).

</p><p>Vermutlich erlebte Terach den Weiterzug Abrahams nach Kanaan mit. Abrahams Alter wird mit 75 Jahren angegeben (<a href="Genesis_(Bibel)" title="Genesis (Bibel)"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Gen</span></a> 12,4 ). Ausgehend von Terachs Alter bei der Geburt des Sohnes muss er zu diesem Zeitpunkt 145 Jahre alt gewesen sein. Auch der <a href="Samaritanischer_Pentateuch" title="Samaritanischer Pentateuch">Samaritanische Pentateuch</a> belegt, dass Terach noch lebte, als Abraham Haran verließ.<sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> <a href="Apostelgeschichte_des_Lukas" title="Apostelgeschichte des Lukas"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Apg</span></a> 7,4  widerspricht dem: „Von dort ließ Gott ihn [Abraham] nach dem Tod seines Vaters in dieses Land übersiedeln, in dem ihr jetzt wohnt.“ Aufgrund dessen lässt sich übrigens annehmen, dass die drei Söhne Terachs nicht Drillinge waren, sondern er ab dem Alter von 70 Jahren drei Söhne bekam. Als er Abraham bekam, müsste er dementsprechend bereits 130 Jahre alt gewesen sein. Derselbe Sprachstil wird auch bereits für die Söhne <a href="Noach" title="Noach">Noahs</a> verwendet (<a href="Genesis_(Bibel)" title="Genesis (Bibel)"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Gen</span></a> 5,32 ), jedoch ist auch dies nur eine grobe Angabe, ab wann Noah Kinder bekam (<a href="Genesis_(Bibel)" title="Genesis (Bibel)"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Gen</span></a> 9,28f , <a href="Genesis_(Bibel)" title="Genesis (Bibel)"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Gen</span></a> 10,21 , <a href="Genesis_(Bibel)" title="Genesis (Bibel)"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">Gen</span></a> 11,10 ).

</p><p>Als Ahnherr gewinnt Terach auch insofern an Bedeutung, als nicht nur Abraham und seine Frau, sondern auch die Frauen der Abraham-Nachkommen Isaak und Jakob zu seiner Sippe gehören: Rebekka, Rahel und Lea sind Nachkommen von Terachs Sohn Nahor. Durch die endogame Eheschließung wird Israel ätiologisch in seiner Umwelt verwurzelt.<sup id="cite_ref-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
